The Greek Language Center announces the new period of the distance learning program “Pathways in the teaching of Greek as a second/foreign language” for teachers in Greece and abroad (http://diadromes.greek-language.gr). The courses start on Monday 9 September 2024 and last 9 months. Registration applications are accepted from 23/04/2024 until 05/09/2024 at the online address www.greek-language.gr/routes.

The program consists of the following eight modules, which cover all thematic areas of interest to the teacher of Greek as a second/foreign language:

1. Lesson planning and management, teaching the four skills

2. Teaching grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation

3. Teaching a foreign language via computer (Computer Assisted Language Learning)

4. Language teaching to children

5. Aspects of language (Variety of language, textual genres and literary discourse)

6. Bilingualism: Language and thought in the bilingual speaker

7. When cultures talk at school: issues of intercultural education

8. Evaluation of student performance

The program, which since its first year of implementation, in 2007, was awarded the European Language Label, is constantly being updated and improved, while offering flexibility in its follow-up, as it is implemented entirely from a distance with asynchronous teaching. The trainees in each unit have 24-hour access to the material and discussion forums for direct communication with the lecturers as well as the trainees, in order to have an exchange of opinions and a constructive dialogue.

2 teleseminars are held in each module, in real time, for live communication with the teaching team.

Unique features of the program:

– At least three specialized teachers in each module, with many years of experience in their field, teach, supervise and directly answer the questions of the trainees.

– Teaching utilizes principles of distance education.

– The trainees prepare work in each unit with the guidance and support of the teachers.

– From 2022-2023, an online community of teachers will be operating, to which the graduates join. This innovation responds to modern scientific research, which does not consider teacher training as a one-time activity that is completed with the cycle of some courses. The online community environment responds to this need, providing the opportunity for continued collaboration and information in the future.

Anyone involved in and/or interested in the teaching of Greek as a second/foreign language in Greece and abroad can participate in the program, as long as they are graduates of Greek philology, foreign philology, pedagogic departments, theological schools or of other university departments of Greek or equivalent foreign universities. Candidates who have not completed higher education studies are conditionally accepted.
