The book “Cultural Routes in Greece” examines how cultural routes can strengthen the creative economy and sustainable development.

In the book ‘Cultural routes in Greece: Perspectives for the creative economy’ of the author Kostas G. Elizabeth the cultural routes and the prospects for promotion and corresponding utilization of their potential are presented, as it is crucially focused on sustainable development and the creative economy. The institution of the cultural route, relatively recently widespread in Europe, is, due to its potential, an important “tool” for the utilization and promotion of cultural heritage, offering to enrich the experience of the modern traveler and to create opportunities for the economic development of the regions.

The book thoroughly analyzes the existing theories and concepts of cultural tourism and cultural routes and proposes a new model for planning cultural routes, which includes key issues such as “Museum”, “Natural environment” and “the role of new technologies”. In addition, the book deals thoroughly with the subject of the “Creative economy” and all factors concerning its relationship with the development of cultural routes in Greece. It focuses on issues such as the “creative tourist destination” and “sustainable development”, with the aim of highlighting the positive involvement of these factors in the context of strengthening all parameters related to the dynamics of the creative economy. It also analyzes the issue of planning and creating cultural routes in Greece, with special reference to the creation of cultural routes in Sparta and Ioannina and the proposal to include one of the two proposed routes in the Council of Europe’s Cultural Routes Network.

This new book aspires to fill the gap in research and contribute to the development of a model for the planning of cultural routes in Greece, based on the domestic and international literature, although the bibliographic references are quite limited but the shortcomings in the issue of the formulation of a model for the planning of cultural routes are already identified. It is a reference manual on the planning and development of cultural routes in Greece, since it condenses the know-how produced in Greece and abroad on the specific subject, which secures funds for the maintenance of the monuments and contributes to the extension of the tourist season.
