Aluminum, titanium and silicon: What was in the African dust that “suffocated”…

--

Elements such as aluminum and titanium contained the African dustwhich covered Greece, with a more difficult day on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.

The dust spread over many parts of the country, mainly in the south, painting the sky red and orange and causing breathing problems for many people.

The Hellenic Geological and Mining Research Authority prepared a special interesting study on the constitution of African dust.

As he states in a post on social media, he collected and analyzed using the new electron microscope state-of-the-art JSM-IT500L scanner, which can magnify up to 300,000 times, a sample of the African dust that has covered Attica in recent days.

Optically the dust does not exceed 10 mm in sizewhile its chemical composition includes the elements aluminum (Al), silicon (Si) and calcium (Ca) with a minimal percentage in iron (Fe) and titanium (Ti).

African dust is the essence play, which floats and moves due to the winds and its small size.

The following photos show the first results from the qualitative analysis of the African dust.

Recommendations on African dust from the Department of Health

The Ministry of Health, following the regularly scheduled update by the Ministry of Environment and Energy (last update today at 8:00) and within the framework of its responsibilities for the protection of public health, recommends the following instructions for informing the public with precautionary measures as following:

A. Recommendations for people at increased risk

People with respiratory problems

Heart patients

children as well

people over 65 years old

they should avoid any physical exercise-activity outdoors.

It is also recommended to avoid staying outdoors, especially in areas with increased traffic.

People with asthma may need more frequent inhalations of reliever medicine. If symptoms persist, it is recommended to contact the attending physician.

B. Recommendations to the general population

Every person is advised to avoid any physical exercise outdoors and to limit the time spent outdoors especially in areas with increased traffic. During his stay indoors, doors, balcony doors and windows should be kept closed.

Following our update today, through an electronic mail message (at 14:00), from the measurement network of the Ministry of the Interior, according to the meteorological forecasts of the EMY and the so far recorded concentrations of suspended particles (AS10), it is estimated that the average daily PM10 concentrations today Tuesday 23/4/2024 will fluctuate at moderate levels (51-75 µg/m3) due to dust transport from the Sahara.

For these reasons, the Ministry of Health reminds the DYG2/G.P. oik.3191/14.1.14 circular with recommendations for the protection of public health depending on the concentrations of suspended particles (A.S.10) as follows:

Recommendations for people at increased risk for 24-hour concentrations of A.S.10: 51-75 (µg/m3)

“Adults with respiratory problems, adults with heart disease and children with respiratory problems should limit any vigorous physical exercise, especially if it is done outdoors.”
