“The contribution of the Homeric Epics to modern life”: Program of the Armenian High School with the Ionian University in Corfu

A very important program of school activities on the subject of the contribution of the Homeric Epics to modern life was implemented by the students of the Gymnasium of Armeni in collaboration with the Ionian University in Corfu.

The program was implemented by the school’s philologist Maria Karabatsa Dr. of Modern Greek Studies. The students of the High School classes prepared for four months with special meetings the thematic axes of a pioneering program whose object was to highlight aspects of the great Homeric work that touch modern life. In more detail, through the Iliad and the Odyssey, the students approached timeless universal values ​​such as hospitality, respect for women, nostalgia for the native land, friendship and, in general, belief in humanitarian values.

As part of the work, Armeniou High School made an educational visit to Corfu. The teachers and students were welcomed by the distinguished Larissa University Professor Mr. Athanasios Efstathiou, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the Ionian University, a scientist with global prestige and recognition.

Mr. Efstathiou analyzed to the students the concepts they had approached during the preparatory stage of their work, giving at the same time his own scientific opinion on the work of Homer, approaching the students in a completely pedagogical way in the special workshop he organized. The teacher in charge, Ms. Karabatsa, agreed to expand the school’s collaboration with teachers of Secondary and Post-Graduate Education in Corfu, the heart of the Homeric ideal, and to develop collaborations with schools abroad that carry out similar studies and actions. At the same time, he thanked Mr. Koesmitoras and the other university teachers who kindly guided the students around the School’s premises and libraries.

As part of the three-day visit to Corfu, the students of the Armenian High School, accompanied by the Principal Mr. Kostas Karabatsas as well as the teacher Mr. Kostas Nikos, visited historical places and monuments of the island of Phaeacians such as the tomb of Kapodistrias, the Solomon Museum and other well-known tourist destinations.
