The A1 Department of the Supreme Court announced at noon on Wednesday (24/4) the final list of parties that will participate in the European elections of June 9, and it does not include the party of Spartans. It is noted that ND, PASOK and the New Left submitted memoranda against the participation of the Spartans. A total of 15 parties were cut from the European elections.

It is worth noting that the president of the A1 department only announced the list of parties and party coalitions that will take part in the European elections and no other information about the reasoning of the Supreme Court.

Specifically, 31 parties out of a total of 46 will claim the citizens’ vote in the June 9 European elections. With a unanimous decision of the Supreme Court, the 31 parties got a ticket to participate in the European elections, while the Spartans and 14 other parties were left out.

In fact, the party of Vassilis Stigas had paid the amount corresponding to the electoral fee of 20,000 euros on time, but it is under scrutiny for its close ties with Ilias Kasidiaris, who was convicted at the first instance for a criminal organization.

The memos against the Spartans

It is recalled that ND, PASOK and New Left had submitted memorandums in the previous days to the Areio Pagos against the participation of the Spartans, emphasizing the relations with the goldsmith Ilias Kasidiaris, who was convicted for a criminal organization. ND, in its memorandum, noted that this is the natural leader of the party and requested the exclusion of the party from the European elections.

Awaiting the Electoral Court’s decision

Meanwhile, developments are soon expected from the Electoral Court, which will decide whether the Spartans should lose their seats in the Parliament, in case it judges that their natural leader is the one convicted of participating in a criminal organization and imprisoned in Ilias Kasidiaris prison. Which will either lead to a proportional distribution of their seats to the other parties, or to repeat elections in the districts where they were elected.
