The issue of the operation of the National Sports Center of Corfu is coming back with intensity, with shots on both sides from the local SEGAS and the local Administration. In the matter, the PASOK-KINAL Member of Parliament for Corfu also intervened, agreeing with what was mentioned yesterday in a press conference given by the members of the Local Committee of Corfu of SEGAS, essentially denouncing the fact that the EAK has been closed for a year without anything being done for its proper re-operation.

The stand of the National Stadium, closed for a year for security reasons, was one of the places where the members of the T.E. stood. of SEGAS and the President Mr. Giannis Lessis pointed out that it is the committee’s duty to inform about the conditions under which the athletics athletes train.

The remarkable thing about the relevant interview is, first of all, that despite the adverse conditions, our athletes bring significant performances and distinctions, but also that present at the statements of the local SEGAS was the Corfu Member of Parliament of PASOK – KINAL Dim. Biagis and the former Regional Governor Spyros Spyrou. (See related report by startmedia at the link:

Among other things, Mr. Lessis stated that a year later no action has been taken to improve the situation and Mr. Spinoulas expressed doubt as to whether the procedures by which the stands were considered dangerous were done correctly. Nikos Moschos stated that everyone is “very angry and disappointed with the behavior of the appointed management committee of the EAK” and pointed out in particular the amount of 210,000 euros sent by the Ministry with a special mention of the required actions, but without having been done in in this case nothing.

Dimitris Biagis: Full identification with T.E. YOU

PASOK’s Corfu Member of Parliament Dimitris Biagis expresses his full identification with the Local Committee of SEGAS in a statement today, who states: “We stand by the Local Committee of SEGAS of Corfu and join in its fair fight for the improvement of conditions in sports facilities of the island and especially in the National Sports Center of Corfu. The struggle of the athletes, coaches and sports people is a struggle of all the people of Corfu.

Despite our questions, our interventions with topical questions and reports, despite the memos and letters to the relevant Ministry, the State has not fulfilled what it has promised and the sports youth of our island deserve.

We invite all the institutions of the island to a joint struggle to solve the major problems facing the Sports Center of Corfu and we declare our full support to the people of sports who make us proud with their morals, competitiveness, dignity and the tangible results of their work them on the playing fields.

The response of the EAK Administration

The Administration of the EAK speaks of inaccuracies and personal feelings with a statement signed today by its President K. Agathos. Among other things, in its response report, the Administration of the EAK states:

The stadium has not been sealed, since the open track is operating normally after interventions in accordance with the legislation so that athletes’ training sessions are not lost. The building facilities of the stadium remain closed (stands, offices, canteen, etc.) following a decision of the PIN Committee, responsible for licensing, and after repeated complaints and pressure in all directions about the inappropriateness of the facilities from persons and organizations that use the stadium. Changing the category of the field does not automatically remove the danger of the stands. Interventions and technical improvements do not exist in facilities that are dangerous, inappropriate and unlicensed (such as changing rooms, toilets, offices, etc.) according to the data so far.

The characterizations of a hostile administration are personal opinions and are certainly not proven, but on the contrary, they may be considered malicious and perhaps hide some empathy towards persons and institutions. It should be emphasized that neither the present nor any administration closed any facility, since it is not responsible for this. We would like to inform you that the owner of the installation is the Ministry and the only one responsible for radical interventions (as required throughout the EAK and especially in the stadium). The administration is making efforts to keep all the facilities in operation by making interventions as far as its budget allows while pressuring both the Ministry and local bodies to contribute to the improvement of conditions.

Perhaps the nullification of all the efforts and planned interventions of the current administration, which certainly did not take over a new and model sports center, nor did it worsen the already existing situation with its actions, does not show a cool and independent approach.
