The members of T.E.SEGAS Corfu gave a press conference one year after the closure of the National Stadium for security reasons.

After thanking PASOK MP Dimitris Biagis and former ND MP and former Regional Governor Spyros Spyrou for their presence, President I. Lessis emphasized that they took this initiative to inform the people of Corfu in what condition their athletes are training athletics, who even have great distinctions despite the adverse conditions.

A year since the closure of EAKK, absolutely nothing has been done to improve it“, pointed out Mr. Lessis, blaming the Stadium Management Committee for its attitude as, as he said, “for every solution we give it, it also presents us with a problem. We have asked the committee to make a request to the GGA to declassify the stadium from the category it is in now for international and long range national competitions so that the conditions for getting permission to hold athletics competitions are much less. They have closed the local offices with a barbed wire – reminiscent of other times, the locks have been changed without any notice».

Mr. Sp. Spinoulas, in his capacity as a civil engineer, for his part stood by the conclusion drawn by the committee, which considered the stands dangerous and for this reason closed the stadium. He questioned the suitability of the people who participated in the committee as well as the procedures that were followed.

The athletics coach, Nikos Moschos, emphasized that “we are beyond angry and disappointed with the behavior of the appointed committee“. He referred to the extra money that Mr. Vroutsis sent 210 thousand and the letter that came with it, giving them guidelines on what should be done but still nothing was done.

The management of the Stadium responded to what was said with a Press Release citing inaccuracies.

The stadium has not been sealed, since the open track is operating normally after interventions in accordance with the legislation so that athletes’ training sessions are not lost. The building facilities of the stadium (stands, offices, canteen, etc.) remain closed following the decision of the PIN Committee. We also note that there have never been designated offices of SEGAS inside the Sports Center since its establishment, with the exception of the year 2022-2023, which were essentially hosted without any concession in the offices of the Administration Committee. The administration is making efforts to keep all the facilities in operation by making interventions as far as their budget allows while pressuring both the Ministry and local bodies to contribute to improving conditions».
