Kare-kare the drill for a major earthquake in Crete

The 7.2 Richter earthquake caused cracks in the crowning of the Aposelemi dam according to the scenario of the large exercise “Minos 2024” which takes place in its four regional units Crete from Monday 22 to Wednesday 24 April.

In the abandoned village of Sfentyli, which due to the drought has “emerged” again, on the second day of the exercise, a series of exercises related to extricating the injured, rescuing and transporting people found in the water, with special inflatable means, transporting the dead took place , providing first aid to the injured in safe tents set up around the dam.

Special assistance in the exercises was provided by her specially trained dogs EMAK as well as drone operators who were scanning the area to locate any injured. The general coordination, supervision and guidance of the exercise was given by the Commander of the 3rd EMAK, Mr. Stavros Kalogiannakis.

The exercise was attended by men from the Fire Department, EKAB rescuers, firefighters of the 3rd EMAK, police officers, the Army, volunteers from “Smile of the Child”, officials from Civil Protection, the Hellenic Red Cross as well as volunteers from the EKAB school who pretended to be trapped while some others were desperately calling for help.

About 150,000 people take part in the exercise and it is being held for the first time in Crete and for the first time nationwide on such a large scale, while, as stated by the president of the OASP, Mr. Efthymios Lekkas“every year a similar exercise will take place in a different region in Greece”.
