A tour of the Ziller footprints in Patras with the Society for Achaean Studies

--

A very successful guided tour entitled “Neoclassical Patras in the footsteps of Ziller” was organized by the Society of Achaean Studies on Sunday, April 21, 2024, with the cooperation of the Society for Social Action and Culture Koino_Topia, as part of the cycle of activities for the 100 years since the death of architect Ernesto Ziller, implemented by EAS with the auspices and financial support of the Ministry of Culture.

The tour was carried out by the secretary general of EAS Xenophon Papaefthimiou, a museologist and conservator of works of art and included the Municipal Theater of Patras, I.N. Evangelistrias, the Perivolaropoulou House (where a more extensive presentation was made), the Ragou House and the wider area of Satovriandou Street.

The walking tour, in which 50 fellow members and friends of the Society of Achaean Studies and Koino_Topia participated, started outside the Municipal Theater of Patras “Apollo” (founded in 1871 and its construction was completed in 1872) and continued at the Metropolitan Church of Evangelistrias, whose roof plans were prepared by E. Ziller and which are preserved in the archives of the Church.

Immediately after, the participants visited the Perivolaropoulos House, at the junction of Maizonos and Agios Nikolaos streets, where they were welcomed as hostess by Mrs. Katerina Meligkoni.

The two-storey building is of neoclassical style built at the end of the 19th century, with a ground-floor portico, which is supported by Ionic style marble columns and has a painted decoration on its roof. It has an impressive entrance with a marble staircase leading to the first floor which retains the painted decoration on its ceilings – typical of the neoclassical mansions of its time.

The restoration of the building statically and floor plans was completed by private initiative in 1999 and from 2022 part of it houses the product development activities of the company Bakalaros Group. The possibilities offered by the space today gave the opportunity for a more comprehensive discussion about the neoclassical influences in Patras.

At the Perivolaropoulos House, the tour was combined with a visit by students of the Department of Architecture of the University of Patras, who, under the supervision of the Department’s teacher Yiannis Papadopoulos, implemented an art workshop based on the aesthetics of Ziller, which was completed in the space of Koino_Topia.

The last stop of the tour was the wider area of Satovriandou Street and Ragou’s house, where Mrs. Aliki Ragou welcomed the participants. It is literally a living museum in terms of the building, floor plans and furnishings.

On behalf of the organizers, the President of EAS, Vangelis Politis Stergiou, expressed special thanks to Mrs. Ilia Ragou, Katerina Meligkoni for their cooperation and to the Bakalaros Group for the hospitality at the Perivolaropoulou House.
We remind you of the top event four months ago (December 15, 2023) at the Silver Market entitled “Ernests Ziller and Greek Neoclassicism in Patras” with distinguished speakers, while a collector’s edition will follow with photos, archival material and texts about Ziller and his relationship with Patras.

The program is implemented with the cooperation of the Departments of Architects and Tourism Management of the University of Patras, the Hellenic Institute of Architecture, the Association of Architects of the Prefecture of Achaia and Koino_Topia, as well as the support of the company Mosaic//Culture & Creativity.
