During a meeting of the Municipal Committee of Western Lesvos, on 04-22-2024, approved the technical description and the submission of a funding proposal to the state aid program of the Recovery and Resilience Fund entitled “Improvement and modification of accessibility to Greek beaches” for the act entitled: “Improvement of infrastructure for people with mobility problems of the swimming beaches of the Municipality of Western Lesvos for the creation of an integrated tourist product”.

According to the proposal, the technical description of the project for 279,440 euros provides for the supply of equipment and materials to four beaches of the Municipality of Western Lesvos, specifically the beaches Vatera, Anaxo, Skala Polichnitou and Tsonia for the service of the disabled in the context of the development of tourism for people with disabilities and the attraction of tourists from this social group as well as the service of the residents of the area.

The proposed site is to include: 1) sea access mechanism for people with mobility problems 2) non-permanent PWD changing room with shower and installed photovoltaic system 3) changing room anti-theft protection system 4) telemetry system 5) wooden walkway for PWD access 6) shaded areas 7) disabled parking spaces 8) signage.

All of the above will be wheeled and removable constructions exactly as provided by the relevant legislation for services on the seafront.

In the proposal it is also noted the intention of the municipal authority to undertake the operation and maintenance of the proposed project, that no additional price be imposed on the companies adjacent to the above facilities for the concession of the areas on the seafront that are in any place related to the proposed PWD service infrastructures. Finally, it is noted the intention of the municipal authority to provide the above proposed accessibility infrastructures free of charge, in the context of the social policy of the Municipality and that there is no ticket for the access of the disabled to the mechanisms or the access ramps, both for citizens and for tourists.
