Its armed forces Honduras they proceeded to confiscate a quantity of more than 2.8 tons cocaine which they spotted on two small boats and on a beach on the coast of the country in the Caribbean, they announced yesterday Monday.

Initially, “2,760 packets” of drugsweighing one kilogram each, explained the spokesman of the armed forces, Santos Nolasco.

Some of the drugs were found buried on a beach and investigations are continuing in the area to determine if there are other quantities there, the spokesman added.

The drugs, which after the investigations reached 2,835 packages, they were transferred to the capital and to the district of Grathias a Dios, as reported by the Honduran authorities. On March 24, more than 1.3 tons of cocaine was seized and ten alleged drug traffickers in the Caribbean were arrested.

Since the 1970s, Honduras has been part of the cocaine transport routes from Latin America where it is produced to the US.

Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who took office in January 2022, has vowed to crack down on trafficking.

Her predecessor, Juan Orlando Hernandez, was extradited and detained in the US shortly after leaving office. On March 8, a jury in New York federal court found him guilty, at the conclusion of a landmark trial, of facilitating the importation of more than 500 tons of cocaine into the United States from 2004 to 2022. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 26. He faces up to life in prison.
