Most hospitals on the islands are understaffed ahead of Easter and the start of the tourist season, as doctors cannot afford the high cost of living and refuse to fill the positions.

The president of POEDIN, Mr. Giannakos, listed the staff shortages in the islands’ hospitals and Health Centers according to the STAR television station.

They serve only 1 pediatrician, 1 microbiologist, 1 dentist. Pathological cases are examined by the pediatrician.

According to a POEDIN survey published by the president of the federation, Michalis Giannakos, although notices are being issued, health workers are not interested in staffing the islands’ health units as they cannot make ends meet.

“For 1,850 euros you can’t find a doctor, for 800 euros you can’t find a nurse and an ambulance rescuer. Cost of living much higher. The salary is not even enough for the rent of the house. The institutions of the islands do not contribute with incentives to attract and stay, although health is everyone’s business”, emphasized Mr. Giannakos and continued:

“What is the difference between working on an island and Cyprus? The distance and expenses from the place of family residence the same. Or rather better in Cyprus because you secure plane tickets for free. Salaries in Cyprus are almost triple for doctors and nurses plus incentives. Labor insecurity of the contracted workers another reason that leads to resignations from the health units of our islands”.
