On Monday, April 22, the British Ambassador Matthew Lodge meet them Official Speakers and Candidateswho shared their experience of participating in the competition “The Earthshot Prize” and, above all, their vision and aspirations for a more sustainable future by harnessing scientific and technological innovation.

The event hosted on its premises Bank of Greece, greeted the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Finance, Christina Papakonstantinou, while the author and columnist Mr. Thodoris Georgakopoulos was responsible for coordinating the discussion.

Greece participates with five Official Rapporteurs, who, as part of more than 400 presenters, are invited to submit nominations for the best and brightest proposals that have the potential to achieve the restoration and regeneration of the planet.

Launched as an initiative by the Royal Foundation and Prince of Wales William in 2020, the Earthshot Award is now one of the most important awards for environmental action. The more than 400 Official Speakers from 75 countries, including Greece, are looking the most effective solutions to meet the challenges of improving air quality, revitalizing the seas, managing waste effectively and tackling climate change. The specific topics have been selected in collaboration with leading environmental expertsconcern the entire planet.

In his greeting, British Ambassador Matthew Lodge noted, among other things: “It is extremely important that there is constant participation and representation of Greece in the institution of the Earthshot Award with innovative proposals for a better world. It is, of course, no surprise as I am well aware of the talent and potential of Greek scientists and businessmen.

The British Embassy strongly supports and promotes the agenda of tackling climate change and protecting biodiversity, two issues that require immediate and coordinated actions. The Earthshot Award is a first-class opportunity to keep this agenda in the foreground and to highlight innovative entries in Greece and internationally.”

In the weeks leading up to the announcement of the winners in November, 15 candidates from all over the world will be selectedof which 5 will receive £1 million in prize money to develop their idea.

The event for the presentation of the Speakers and Candidates in Athens had an additional goal: the building a community around the Earthshot Prize where partners, investors, sensitized scientists and entrepreneurs will contribute to development of designs and solutions and maximizing their effectiveness and will honor persons and places that lead the way, inspiring even more aware citizens and agencies to cooperate for the protection and restoration of the environment.

The Earthshot Prize was established in 2020 and is the prize for the environment and a platform for social and environmental impact at a global level designed to discover, highlight and develop solutions for the restoration of the environment and climate in the decade 2020-2030 .

Tackling climate change is a firm priority for the UK and it actively encourages global initiatives for a sustainable future. Through the Zero Emissions Strategy, Britain already in 2021 has adopted policies and is implementing specific measures in this direction, while in 2023 the National Zero Emissions Development Program focuses on the development and widespread use of technologies to eliminate carbon emissions in homes, industry and transportation.
