The stake of European elections of June 9 it is both European and national. We are not voting for governmental stability, nor for the political survival of Kyriakos Mitsotakis, as he boasts. We vote for the basic principles and values that make Greece a member of the narrow core of united Europe: Democracy and Prosperity. This is what the president of SYRIZA states, among other things, in his article in the newspaper “TA NEA”. Stefanos Kasselakis.

Mr. Kasselakis additionally points out in the article that: “These basic principles and values, national and European, are threatened today by the government of the ND, to the extent that Greece deviates dangerously from European standards. By deviating from these basic European principles – Democracy and Prosperity – the stability which the prime minister has the audacity to invoke while putting his policy at risk can indeed be threatened. The European elections, therefore, are the great opportunity for the citizens to put a brake on the descent that the current government is leading us on and to stop the destabilization of the country that bears the signature of Mitsotakis”.

He then noted about the Republic: “The blows are consecutive. They were reflected in the resolution of the European Parliament on the rule of law in Greece. A vast majority that includes from the Renew Europe of Macron, their Social Democrats of Soltz and Sanchez, the Burbok Greens, the Liberals, the Left and even some members of the European People’s Party called out the Mitsotakis government, which was supported only by the majority of the EPP and the Far Right. The European Parliament’s SOS for Democracy in the country was met by the Prime Minister with conspiracy theories about “enemies of Greece”. They are our enemies Macron, The Soltz, the Burbok, The Sanchez? Or are they simply friends and defenders of democratic institutions? It is not, however, only the resolution – kolafos. It is also the European Public Prosecutor’s Office that raises the question of the rule of law in Greece. It is the committees of the European Parliament that abandon the government for the Tempe crime and the wiretapping scandal. It is the European Commission’s report on the rule of law in Greece. They are the reports of NGOs and research centers on media freedom and the functioning of institutions. All this is simultaneously Greek and European. The country has today reached the point of being threatened with grexit by the democratic European institutions. And we cannot allow that. Here, then, is the first stake of the European elections. We are voting to protect our democratic institutions from a prime minister and a government that sees them as a tool for the exercise and enforcement of power.” Regarding welfare, he emphasized: “Greek citizens experience a harsh economic reality that puts them in an extremely unfavorable position compared to the citizens of most European countries: Based on real GDP per capita (Eurostat), Greece is the second poorest country of the EU-27. Only Bulgaria is poorer than our country. Of the former memorandum countries (Ireland, Portugal, Cyprus), Greece has the lowest income and the worst economic performance. For example, the debt in Greece is at 165.5% of GDP, in Portugal at 107.5%, in Cyprus at 80%, in Ireland at 42%. Also, Greece has the second largest current account deficit in Europe after Romania (-6.8 billion euros), while our trade deficit is the second largest in Europe in absolute terms and amounts to 25.4 billion euros. Finally, Greece is the only EU country of the “27” where real wages and incomes are lower than where they were 15 years ago. This practically means that more than one in four Greeks today lives on the edge of poverty, while two in three are barely making ends meet, as the country is “championship” in accuracy and especially in food and fuel prices.
All this after three memoranda and enormous sacrifices by the citizens. Here, then, is the second stake, national and European: for Greece to connect its economic policy with the well-being of the many and not with the surplus profits of the few, as the Mitsotakis government is making sure.”

So we vote nationally and Europeanly.

For real respect for the separation of powers (legislative, executive, judicial). For truly independent authorities that will not be abused by government interventions. For Justice for all, without protection and solidarity of fireplaces. For truly independent media that will be left free to fulfill their institutional role. To respect the rights that will be confirmed daily in practice. For zero tolerance to their encroachment. To isolate Far Right rhetoric, toxicity and racism. We vote for real Democracy. To abolish social inequalities. To generate wealth and distribute it fairly to citizens. For a clean and fair tax system, friendly for businesses and employees. To stop distributing the funds of the Development Fund to the mothers and to use them for real development. We vote for real Prosperity.

The modern European Left represented by SYRIZA will fight for all this. June 9th will mark the end of destabilization and the beginning of the great Upheaval.
