The Holy Metropolis of Larissa and Tyrnavos announces the holding of the 2nd Festival of Choirs of Byzantine Music of Larissa, which will be organized on Tuesday, April 23, 2024 and Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 7 p.m., in the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Achillios of Larissa. The six choirs that will participate will sing hymns of Great Lent and Holy Week.

On Tuesday, April 23, the following choirs will present their program:

Choir of the School of Byzantine Music of the Holy Metropolis of Larissa and Tyrnavos “SAINT ACHILLIOS”,
Choir of Psalters of the Holy Church of Agios Georgios Nikia Larisa and
“Thessalian melodious”,

On Thursday, April 25, the choirs will sing:

“Metropolitan Dance of Larissa”,
“Angelic Dance” (male and female choir) and
“Byzantine and Municipal Workshop”.

In detail, the following are highlighted:

“Byzantine music and the art of chanting, as a living traditional liturgical art, is one of the most important cultural assets that contribute dynamically to the self-definition and self-awareness of modern Hellenism. It is registered in the national index of intangible cultural heritage, laying the foundations of a continuous musical search and wandering, at the same time transmitting this wonderful wealth to all peoples.

On the occasion of the upcoming Easter Feast, our Choirs will perform contemporary hymns, emphasizing the oppressive atmosphere of the period, but also the contexts of our spiritual struggle. The Festival program includes a wide range of hymn compositions that highlight the beauty and spiritual depth of Holy Week.

It is also known that during the Holy and Great Week with the Masses and hymns that are heard in our Churches, the whole of human history is recapitulated, from the creation and fall of man, to the re-creation, projecting Christ, the Resurrected Lord of the Church, that is, the One who gives meaning to human history by saving man. That is why, for the Fathers of the Church, the hymnographic discourse is related to the Sermon, since the hymns are the pastoral means for the edification of the faithful.

All devout and music-loving Christians are invited to attend this two-day musical pilgrimage, to enjoy together the harmony and beauty of our Byzantine music and to be introduced to the deep meaning of Holy Week. We await you with great joy to show off our Choirs, the present and the future of Byzantine music in our country, in a special experience of spiritual renewal and blessing, with respect and reverence, marching towards the Resurrection of our Christ”.
