The residents put a “bomb” in the reaction!

In the “air” there is a risk of shaking the reaction process of Kanakari, since as “P” reveals today, the Coordinating Committee of the residents has ended up filing an appeal to the Justice, for the annulment of the decision of the Municipality and the review of the traffic regulations that it has launch. At the same time, the Commission has requested a meeting with the Deputy Minister of Transport, Christina Alexopoulou, in order to inform her about the matter.

It should be noted here, that by its decision the STE has annulled the decision of opposition in the Municipality of Psychikos.

At the same time, “P” brings to light today for the first time, two revealing documents:

This is the opinion of the Department of Transport and Communications of the Municipality of Achaia, with which it invited the Municipality of Patreon to review the traffic regulations, and on the other hand, for the response of the Directorate of Urban Planning and Construction of the Municipality of Patreon, with which it rejected the indicated review of the studies and clarified the continuation of the implementation of the overall design of the traffic changes.

It is worth noting that in its letter (5/4/23) the Region notes that the review proposal it submitted to the Municipality was based on the opinions of the urban and intercity transport operators in the city of Patras, who also took cognizance of the studies, as materially competent and responsible for the planning and execution of the itineraries that serve the passenger public in the central area of ​​Patras.

WHAT THE DOCUMENTS REPORTED

Among other things, the Region pointed out: The burden of the traffic load on Maizonos/Konstantinoupoleos streets, the difficulty of maneuvering in the urban area of ​​the 18 meter long articulated buses and especially at the Kanakari-Aratou-Maisonos junctions and of the buses from vertical streets in pedestrianized sections of the Maizonos Street (from Aratos to D. Gounari), as well as the management of vehicle parking in the urban center.

Thus, the PE of Achaia proposed the review of the regulations, mainly in the areas where it is evident that doubts are being created regarding the possibility of buses passing and a possible increase in the traffic load, and the examination of the proposal of the Municipal Bus Service for the creation of a bus lane in the opposite direction, on Corinthou Street to the North, in the section between Ag. Sofias and Kolokotroni

For its part, the Municipality of Patreon, in its response letter (19/4/23), justified the rejection of the proposed review of the regulations, as follows:

“It goes without saying that any constructive criticism that would improve any traffic or other kind of planning, which is imposed by your role as the “competent supervisory authority of intercity and urban transport of the PE of Achaia”, as you characteristically mention, would certainly be welcomed by our service, only if it were based on scientific data, since the sole guiding principle of our Directorate’s actions has never been to serve either guild or individual interests, but always the interest of all the citizens of our Municipality, through cooperation with all its agencies city.

Following all of the above, it is obvious that the Municipality will not proceed with the review of the specific studies indicated by you and will plan the implementation of its overall design”.

WHAT THE RESIDENTS SAY

The residents of Kanakari make it clear to “P” that they are in favor of the regeneration of the city and the solution to the traffic problem, but they believe that with the reaction of Kanakari as the exit of Patras, the city will suffer “suffocation”:

“It is now a given, although no one dares to say it publicly, that the famous Doxiadis study on which the whole design is supposed to be based, has:

A) It has expired, because about 25 years have passed.
B) There have been changes that were not foreseen in it. Opening of Kanellopoulos, small and large perimeter, proliferation of vehicles.
C) It has been violated, because Riga Feraiu was intended to be a bus route. Kanakari had to have the same width along the entire length and be straight. It did not foresee a cycle path in Othonos-Amalias. He was talking about an underground parking lot in Psila Alonia with 420 spaces. The 2011 GIS was changed, in order for the KTEL to be in Mylos and not in New Port, as was clearly foreseen.
D) The aim was to facilitate the exit of vehicles from the city. The Doxiadis study has data from measurements of the years 1993-94.

Security Issues
At the same time, the residents, speaking to “P”, raise safety issues, regarding the speed limit on the already narrow road of Kanakari, the small width of the sidewalks, the existence of lighting poles in the middle of the narrow sidewalks, the problematic passage of large vehicles and especially emergencies, the problem of parking, etc.

They also wonder, what is the emergency plan (Xenokratis plan) for the evacuation of the city, when the northbound exits of Agios Andreou and Kanakaris both present the phenomenon of the bottle neck, what is planned in case of damage to the infrastructure in the narrow part of the road and how is traffic regulated then?

In addition, how will it be ensured with the parked cars, the unhindered passage of the fire brigade or garbage truck and what provision is there for the intersection of Mikri Perimetriki and Kanakaris and the number of students who move there, from a total of 4 schools, with all-day traffic.

Finally, the residents, through “P”, also publicly pose critical questions:

– Has the Civil Protection Service been informed? And what is its position on security issues
– Has anyone officially received the project?
– What has been said about the bad works and mudslides in many places
– Has it been taken into account that Kanakari as an exit has 4 uphills, resulting in greater air pollution and noise pollution?
