Frogmore Cottage, formerly the home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, was reclaimed after they decided to settle in California. The couple reportedly spent £2.4m renovating the place before they were asked to vacate. According to documents recently revealed by the Daily Mail, Harry’s choice of date to announce his US residency coincided with the day the couple were ordered to leave Frogmore.
The royal insider suggests that Harry deliberately timed the announcement to the day he and Meghan “officially stepped down as members of the royal family”, despite having the flexibility to choose any other date after settling in California.
“It’s over for them in the UK. If they want a home in the UK, they will have to buy privately,” the source noted at the time.
In June 2023, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned the keys to Frogmore Cottage and the rest of their belongings were shipped to California.
Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, royal expert and author Tom Quinn revealed that Prince Harry was furious and in tears over being evicted from Frogmore. He felt that his father had no right to do this and that it was purely vindictive.
“Prince Harry could not see that his choice to stop being a working member of the royal family would inevitably mean that he would be deprived of his royal residence,” he said.
The Duke of Sussex considered it a harsh rejection from his father King Charles.
“Prince Harry took it as a harsh rejection – a painful reminder of everything he felt when his father fought with his mother during their painful divorce,” explained Tom Quinn.
