The mistake we all make at the gas station – Why we lose up to 100 euros

A tactic that many drivers follow when refueling their car can turn out to be particularly… dangerous for our pocket.

With the price of unleaded petrol flirting with the limit of 2 euros, any mistake during the refueling of a car or a motorcycle costs us dearly.

Given, however, that a visit to the pump – painful as it may be – is inevitable, what we can do is follow a very different strategy, avoiding any losses.

Although the refueling of the car is most often carried out by qualified personnel, it is not uncommon for the phenomenon of fuel overflow to occur.

An overflowing tank increases the possibility of ignition and also carries the risk of causing damage even to the color of the body.

Throwing plenty of water at the point where the overflow has been detected can prevent the worst, however, it would be good to avoid any exaggeration in terms of the amount of fuel we give to our car.

Increased fuel consumption

It is no secret that the greater the weight of our car, the greater the fuel consumption. What many people don’t know, however, is that the weight of our vehicle increases not only due to the placement of unnecessary items in the cabin and trunk, but also due to… smoking the fuel tank.

Certainly, adding 45 liters to our tank will not make a huge difference in the weight of our vehicle compared to adding – for example – 20 liters, and the increase in consumption will hardly be noticeable.

However, in the event that veiling is the norm, in the long run the financial burden will not be negligible at all.

Expiration date

As is known, both gasoline and diesel are products of oil which can last for millions of years. However, when it is refined into fuel, various additives are administered which, while improving the performance of our car’s engine, make it vulnerable to heat, oxygen and moisture.

So long as we smoke our IX with fuel and leave the last one unused in the tank for months the fuel will lose some of its properties, greatly affecting engine operation.

Among the risks involved are difficulty starting the engine, the nozzles, and the growth of micro-organisms which can clog the nozzles, injectors, fuel pump and filter.
