The most prestigious and prestigious award for contemporary art in Great Britain the Turner Prize has been won by some of today’s most famous artists, including Grayson Perry, Mark Wallinger, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Steve McQueen, Wolfgang Tillmans, Damien Hirst , Rachel Whiteread, Anish Kapoor turns 40 this year.

The finalists include, Claudette Johnson, the 65-year-old established black British visual artist known for her large-scale drawings of black women and her involvement with the BLK Art Group, of which she was a founding member. She has been described as “one of the most accomplished visual artists working in Britain today”. The other shortlisted artists are Manila-born Pio Abad, Glasgow-born Jasleen Kaur and Worthing-born Delaine Le Bas.

The Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain opens this autumn (25 September-16 February 2025).

Claudette Johnson was nominated for two shows, at the Courtauld Gallery, her first major museum presentation in London, where she presented works ranging from the ‘semi-abstract’ pieces of the 1980s to her new works, and the exhibition Drawn Out at Ortuzar Projects in New York. She stands out for her black feminist look.

THE Pio Abad he is nominated for his solo exhibition last year, To They Sitting in Darkness, at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. The exhibition told stories of “plunder and barter” surrounding colonialism.

THE Jasleen Kaur is nominated for her solo exhibition Alter Altar at Tramway in Glasgow, which was based on the artist’s childhood in the Sikh community of Glasgow. He managed to present an evocative combination of sound and sculpture to highlight the particularities of family memory and community struggle.

THE Delaine Le Bas is nominated for her presentation “Incipit Vita Nova. Here Begins The New Life/A New Life Is Beginning at Secession’ in Vienna, which reflected the cultural history of the Roma people, with painted textiles and theatrical sculptures.

The Turner Prize, will be awarded on December 3rd. The winner receives £25,000 and £10,000 is awarded to the other shortlisted artists. The exhibition of works by the prize nominees returns to Tate Britain for the first time in six years.
