Many researches and studies conducted by both Greek and foreign scientists have tried to give an explanation to how the ancient Greek theaters have excellent acoustics.

This difficult project of theirs is aimed at finding and understanding the factors, based on which the ancient Greeks built the theaters in specific places and with the appropriate structural “materials”. One of the studies was that of the official scientific journal of the European Acoustics Association, which graded the acoustics of the Epidaurus theater as “excellent”.

Technology in ancient Greece had reached a huge peak… So it happened with the branch of architecture, where technology met aesthetics and artistic masterpieces emerged that adorn every corner of our country and are admired by the whole world.

Our ancestors were excellent connoisseurs of the energy potential and the proper utilization of natural building materials (wood, stone, etc.). They examined the conditions of each site (climate, seismic activity, soil suitability, etc.) and chose the right materials, so that a perfect result would come out.

Some of the materials they used were plinth (material that absorbs seismic shocks and withstands time), optoplinth (something like today’s brick) and hydraulic mortar (something similar to today’s cement for sealing tanks and found in many areas, such as Piraeus, Aegina, Thassos, Corinth, etc.). Mortar was often combined with other materials such as sand and gravel for a better effect.

Representations of gods and heroes, hunting scenes, meanders, spirals, pediments, ornate columns, adorn every ancient Greek building…

It must be emphasized that the construction activity of the Greeks had started thousands of years before classical Greece, similarly with their technology!

And during the Roman era, the buildings that were erected were built either according to the Greek model, or by Greek architects. A typical example is the Pantheon in Rome, the work of Apollodorus from Damascus. But also various thermal baths, aqueducts, libraries, etc. were founded by Greek experts.

Greek architecture “travelled” to all the lengths and breadths of the earth and was adopted by many peoples.

Some of the countless examples of buildings built based on Greek architecture are Machu Picchu in Peru, Teatro Greco in Taormina, Italy, Acragas also in Italy, Jerash in Jordan, Apamea in Syria with its highly characteristic Greek-style capitals , the theater of Leptis Magna in Libya and Aspendos in Asia Minor, Aphrodisias and Miletos also in Asia Minor, Sacsayhuaman in Peru which looks “terrifyingly” like Mycenae, Tiahuanaco in Bolivia, a building in Mexico which also it looks like Mycenae, Giza in Egypt, Uxmal in Mexico with the characteristic meanders that adorn thousands of Greek finds, and many others that are scattered all over the world…

But even today the official buildings of the states use Greek architecture, which is governed by the Apollonian aesthetics of the Greeks as opposed to the westernized one based only on volume (see skyscrapers).

Therefore, as in other fields, so also in the equivalent of architecture, the Greek intervention was of decisive importance, once again marking the global artistic-scientific development…
