A superyacht worth more than 23 million euros belonging to an Italian businessman has gone up in flames off the coast of Ibiza.

According to reports, the 45.72 meter vessel caught fire on Thursday afternoon in Cala Saona, west of the Mediterranean island of Formentera, just a month after it was handed over to its owner.

Two coastguard rescue boats arrived in the area as the nine passengers and seven-member crew of the Aria SF abandoned the ship after a distress signal was sounded after a failed attempt to extinguish the fire.

Fortunately there were no reports of injuries, and the owner of the superyacht, which left the yard just last month after being sold in 2019, has been named as Paolo Scudieri.

The 61-year-old is chairman of interior car parts maker Gruppo Addler, which was founded by his father Achille in 1956, and is said to be worth nearly €500 million. The father of four, who lives in Naples, is an ambassador for Monaco for tourism and founder of a group that owns 19 restaurants in Italy. It was not immediately clear Friday morning if he was on board, although specialist yachting websites say the boat is not currently available for charter.

The superyacht that was engulfed in flames had a swimming pool, five bedrooms and a gym.
