A fence blocking views of Mount Fuji is to be installed at a popular spot by authorities in a Japanese city angered by hordes of foreign tourists and their behaviour.

The mesh will be 2.5 meters high and 20 meters long, a Fujikawaguchiko city official said Friday.

Although there are many spots in the city for anyone to see Fuji, tourists prefer the one where the volcano can be seen behind a Lawson convenience store, a brand that is ubiquitous in Japan.

It is precisely this visual contrast that attracts tourists, especially foreigners.

Not only do tourists ignore the repeated warnings of security guards, they even go so far as to climb onto the roof of a nearby dental clinic to get the perfect shot.

It is, according to AFP, the latest example of action against overtourism in Japan. More than 3 million foreign tourists visited the country in March alone.
