The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, spoke on the first day of the implementation of the pilot project concerning the adoption of an entry ticket in the city, stressing that it was “completely successful”.

According to official data, yesterday, Thursday, 113,000 people made reservations on the municipality’s website, of which 15,000 paid to enter the center of Venice.

The rest were exempted from payment because they are permanent residents, overnight tourists, citizens living in the wider area or went to the Veneto capital for work or health reasons.

The experimental phase continues today, while until the end of June the “mandatory reservation with payment of an entrance ticket of five euros” is to be implemented for another 28 days.

“Nothing has ever been done to regulate tourism, the political representatives are not active because they have no interest in doing it, but I did it,” added Bruniaro.

“We can’t just talk, we have to take real action to protect our city in the interest of future generations, because otherwise the fear of innovation blocks everything,” said the mayor of Venice.

During yesterday’s day, approximately three hundred residents of Galinotati, members of far-left organizations, demonstrated against this measure and clashed with the police when they tried to reach St. Mark’s Square.
