The baby in Gaza who had been saved from his dead mother’s womb did not make it, with doctors hastily proceeding with a caesarean section.
The baby who was rescued from her dead mother’s womb after an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza has died, according to the BBC.
The baby was born by caesarean section in a Rafa hospital shortly after midnight on Sunday (22.04.2024).
Doctors brought the baby to life, using a hand pump to push air into his lungs.
However, he died on Thursday and she was buried next to her mother from which she got her name.
The baby was among 16 children killed in two airstrikes in Rafah last weekend.
All were killed in a bombing targeting the housing complex where they lived.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said they were targeting Hamas fighters and infrastructure.
The baby’s mother was 7.5 months pregnant when the Israeli airstrike took place at the home of the Al-Shakani family just before midnight on Saturday as she, her husband and their 3-year-old daughter slept.
The mother, Sabine, suffered extensive injuries and her husband and daughter were killed, but the baby was still alive in her mother’s womb when rescue crews arrived.
She was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed a caesarean section to save the baby girl.
It appeared that the baby’s condition had stabilized and was then placed in an incubator.
Doctors then described her condition as critical. He weighed just 1.4kg when he was born and had severe breathing problems, which doctors said was due to him being born prematurely.
“This child should have been in the mother’s womb right now, but was denied that right,” said Dr Mohamed Salama, head of the neonatal emergency unit at the Emirati Hospital in Rafah, after her birth.
Her grandmother told the BBC that the family intended to adopt the child.
