In… arrest in absentia of the legendary former chess champion Garry Kasparov proceeded Russia, which accuses him of terrorism and of being an agent of foreign interests.

According to the court in the city of Syktyvkar, which is the largest city in Russia’s northwestern Komi region, the legendary chess player was arrested in absentiaas well as the former member of the Russian parliament Gennady Gudkov, the co-founder of the Free Russia Forum Ivan Tyutrin – the forum has been characterized as an unwanted organization in the country – and the former environmental activist Yevgenia Chirikova.

The four are accused of founding and leading a terrorist organization, financing terrorist activity and publicly justifying it, the court reports, as reported by the TASS. “The court accepted the requests of the investigative bodies for the preventive detention of Kasparov, Gudkov, Chirikova and Tyutrin as a measure of limitation.”

Kasparov responded to the court’s strange arrest warrant in a scathing post on April 24. “Arrested in absentia is definitely the best way I’ve ever been arrested,” he said, adding: “Good company, too. I’m sure we’re all equally honored that Putin’s state of terror is spending time that would otherwise be spent on prosecutions and murders.”
