Fire breaks out on Barbados-flagged ship during passage from Dardanelles and traffic in the strait is temporarily suspended, the Turkish Coast Guard announced on the X social network.

“An engine room fire alarm was received from the vessel of the 107m bulk carrier Ak Discovery moving in the Dardanelles Strait area en route from Egypt to Bulgaria. Rescue boats were immediately dispatched to the ship and extinguishing of the fire began. The strait is temporarily closed in both directions,” the Coast Guard said.

So far the information is about a confirmed injury.

It is noted that close to the site of the fire is the place where Recep Tayyip Erdogan wanted to build the new canal, that of Istanbul, which was canceled after a fierce conflict with the Municipality of Istanbul.

The bulk carrier’s crew was evacuated, the Coast Guard added.

According to the first information, it became known that 1 person of the staff was injured. The injured man was taken to shore by a vessel belonging to the Coast Guard Command.

He was taken by ambulance to the university hospital of Canakkale. It became known that 14 personnel were on board.
