According to Nestlé’s announcement, the presence of the infectious bacteria was detected after the very heavy rains after storm monica which hit southeastern France in mid-March.

Therefore, according to the company, it is the contamination of the waters of the Vergèze well, near Nîmes, from which the water for the Perrier brand has been drawn since 1903

The well is currently shut down and, according to Nestlé, it will start again at the right timeafter the control of the authorities has been completed.

What did the French authorities find?

In a decree obtained by Agence France-Presse on April 19, the prefect of Gard gave notice to the company to immediately suspends the operation of one of the seven basins of the Vergèze well.

According to the decree, the specific water has been contaminated since March 10, 2024 and for several days by microbes that testify to contamination by coliform bacteria and Escherichia coli but also from microbes of the species Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

The decree also emphasized that the contamination of bottled water may endanger the health of consumers.
