The world record claims to have been broken by a German surfer taming a 28.5 meter high wave.

Sebastian Steudtner was surfing last February in Nazare, Portugal, a spot in the Mediterranean known for its ferocious waves and beloved by surfers, and claims he broke the world record there.

A notable record was already held by the 38-year-old, with a wave in 2020, which was 26.2 meters high, also in Nazareth.

While big wave surfing record attempts have historically been measured by video and image analysis, Steudtner’s venture used different, innovative drone technology.

The 38-year-old has been training for huge waves for years and last February, when the conditions were right, he decided the time was right to attempt to catch an even bigger wave.

Steudtner chose February 24th, as it had “the biggest storm and the biggest waves in three or four years”.

“We were, for the first time, surfing the biggest waves in windy conditions,” he said.

The waves at Nazareth can reach the height of a ten-story building and are formed due to an underwater canyon off the coast, which is three miles deep.

Surfers have suffered serious injuries attempting to surf the giant waves. In fact, last year the veteran Brazilian surfer Marcio Freire died after falling from his board during such an attempt.

Dramatic aerial footage shows Steudtner taming the huge foaming waves, knowing that one mistake could cause him terrible trouble.

Observers in Nazareth claimed that some of the waves could even exceed 30 meters.

Porsche has been an ally of the 38-year-old in his efforts in recent years, which helped him in his training by giving him the opportunity to train in its aerodynamic tunnel, designed for cars.

Automaker engineers have also developed state-of-the-art drones to help measure waves.

The official confirmation of the new world record rests with the official governing body, the World Surf League.
