The US Department of Justice has reached a $138.7 million settlement with more than 100 victims of former USA Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted of dozens of incidents of sexual harassment and abuse.
More than 150 women and girls had alleged that Nassar sexually assaulted them under the guise of performing medical treatments.
Among them were Olympic athletes such as Simone Biles and Makayla Maroney.
Victims say that the FBI failed to investigate their claims. This was acknowledged by an inspector general’s report that found senior officials in the FBI’s Indianapolis office made fundamental mistakes and violated multiple FBI policies during their investigation.
The ministry, as reported by CNN, now says that the victims’ allegations “should have been taken seriously from the beginning.”
It also notes that “while the settlements will not undo the damage Nassar has caused, our hope is that they will help give the victims of his crimes some of the critical support they need to continue healing.”
Nassar was brought to justice and convicted by a Michigan state court in prison that reaches 175 years.
In 2021, Nassar’s victims reached a $380 million settlement with the sport’s federation and the US Olympic Committee.
