A tourist from China met a tragic death when she slipped and fell into the active crater volcano in Indonesia. The fatal incident occurred when the tourist along with her companion were taking pictures, immortalizing themselves in the volcano.
The woman, identified as 31-year-old Chinese national Huang Lihong, was with her husband on a guided tour of Ijen – a volcano park in East Java – when she fell into the crater on Saturday, Hongxing News reported.
- The couple had climbed to the top of the active volcano, which is known for the popular phenomenon “blue lava”, to “catch” a photographic snapshot of the volcano at sunrise.
Their guide later told authorities that Lihong had initially kept a safe distance from the rim of the crater after being repeatedly warned of the dangers while posing for pictures.
But then he started walking backwards inches closer – then tripped, tripped and fell into the crater of the volcano.
A photo circulating in local media shows Lihong posing with her leg raised and clouds of sulfur behind her shortly before her fatal fall.
It took rescuers about two hours to recover her body, according to authorities.
Her body was to be flown to Bali before being flown back to China, local media reported.
The Ijen volcano – among a cluster in the area – is known for “blue lava” of, which is caused by the combustion of sulphurous gases.
