The Alternative for Germany (AfD) recorded its worst performance since May 2023 in the new “Trendbarometer” poll. In the same survey, the citizens’ disappointment with the government performance of the Liberals (FDP) is highlighted, but also their pessimism about the prospect of Ukraine’s victory in the war with Russia.

According to the Forsa Institute poll on behalf of the RTL/n-tv broadcasters, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) is still ahead with 31%, unchanged from the previous poll, while the AfD remains in second place and with a loss of one unit it is limited to 16%. The Social Democratic Party (SPD) is at the same percentage, also unchanged, followed by the Greens, stable at 12%. The FDP remains at the 5% mark, as does the newly formed Alliance Zara Wagenknecht (BSW).

When asked which party is most ready to deal with Germany’s problems, 15% choose the Christian Union, 9% the SPD and 7% the Greens, while 5% prefer the AfD. 58% of respondents believe that none of the parties can really solve the country’s current problems.

Ahead of the FDP congress next weekend, the poll explores the public’s view of his government’s performance so far. Only 14% believe that the FDP has tried hard enough to solve the country’s problems, while 77% have the opposite view and only 26% have a positive opinion of FDP leader and finance minister Christian Lindner.

In the same poll, 50% of respondents highlighted the war in Ukraine as the most important issue. But only 35% currently believe that Ukraine can win the war, even if the West supplies it with additional military hardware. 58% now have the opposite view of the outcome of the war. Among AfD supporters the percentage of those who do not believe in a Ukrainian victory reaches 80% and among BSW supporters 93%.
