Indonesia: Tourist fell into an active volcano while posing for the camera

A tourist fell 75 meters into an active volcano in Indonesia while trying to take a photo.

Huang Lihong, 31, from China, was with her husband on a guided tour of Ijen – a cluster of volcanoes – on Saturday when fell into the crater of the active volcano.

The couple had climbed to the top of the volcano, known for its ‘blue fire’ phenomenon, to capture the sunrise.

The tour guide later told authorities that the 31-year-old tourist had initially kept a safe distance from the rim of the crater, as they had received many warnings, at the time he posed, for the dangers involved.

Later, however, he began to take steps back, accidentally stepped on her long clothes, tripped and fell into the crater of the volcano. A photo circulating in local media shows the 31-year-old from China posing while standing on one leg. Clouds of sulfur gas can be seen behind her shortly before her fatal fall.

According to authorities, it took rescuers about two hours to recover her body.
