According to Chinese media reports, the pair had climbed up close to the crater. They wanted to take pictures at sunset against the background of the rare phenomenon that characterizes this particular volcano and is caused by the burning of sulfur gases.

The tour guide who accompanied the group of tourists visiting the volcanic park stated that Lihong initially followed the instructions and kept safe distances, but added that she had been repeatedly instructed not to approach the crater. The guide pointed out that he had told her that selfies near the crater were very dangerous.

While the tour was in progress, the Chinese tourist began to walk away and according to eyewitnesses, she stumbled because her legs got tangled in the long dress she was wearing and so she lost her balance and fell into the volcano.
