As recorded by Libyan and international sources, there has been a recent flow of weapons from Russia to eastern Libya, i.e. the area controlled by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who maintains privileged relations with Moscow.

The flow starts from the port of Tartus in Syria (where Russia has a naval base) and by merchant ships reaches Tobruk, with latest arrival on April 8th. The Libyan agency Fawasel Media published the following video from the port of Tobruk, where military trucks and light towed artillery can be seen being unloaded, writing that it has information that it is the 5th shipment in 45 days. Haftar was also visited several times last year by the Deputy Minister of Defense of Russia, Yunus-bek Yevkurov.

The arrival of Russian weapons, which may be intended to reinforce Haftar’s forces, as well as Russian forces already stationed there, also coincides with the appearance of Russian military and anti-aircraft systems in Niger (which borders Libya), while Mali and Burkina Faso have strengthened their relations with Moscow. So it is not improbable that the supply via Tobruk also concerns these countries or, in general, the increasingly intense – and armed – presence of Russia in Sahel countries. Where we also have the reactivation of the Wagner group, in a new role as an “anti-terrorist” force, offering its services to African countries.
