Global military spending increased for the ninth consecutive year in 2023, reaching a total of $2.4 trillion.

THE 6.8% increase in 2023 was the steepest annual increase since 2009 and pushed global spending to the highest level ever recorded by the SIPRI database.

The global military burden—as defined by military spending as a percentage of global gross domestic product (GDP)— increased to 2.3% in 2023. Average military spending as a percentage of government spending increased by 0.4 percentage points to 6.9% in 2023 and global military spending per person was the highest since 1990, at $306.

The position of Greece

THE position of Greece in the relevant list between 2022 and 2023 it moved from 29th to 33rd (-17%) spending 7.7 billion euros.

The reasons for the increase in military spending

The increase in global military spending in 2023 can be attributed mainly to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the escalation of geopolitical tensions in Asia and Oceania and the Middle East. Military spending increased in all five geographic regions, with the largest spending increases recorded in Europe, Asia and Oceania and the Middle East.

The top 10 countries with the most military spending in 2023 are the US, China, Russia, India, Saudi Arabia, England, Germany, Ukraine, France and Japan, respectively.

The two countries that spent the most, the USA with 916 billion and China with 296 billion, they accounted for nearly half of global defense spending. The US increased its military spending by 2.3% and China by 6%.
