A 13-month-old boy died in Salerno, southern Italy, when two pit bull dogs attacked him and killed him.

The little boy was in his uncle’s arms when the two dogs, as he was leaving the house, attacked him, snatching the baby from his arms. The child’s uncle, however, was not injured.

The mother ran to save her child but was unable to do so, while she was also injured. He was taken to the hospital where he is being treated, while he is in a state of shock.

As Skytg24 reports, the dogs were in the yard next door when they escaped and attacked the child.

An investigation has been launched into the case by the Salerno prosecutor’s office, with the investigations focusing on the woman who owned the two dogs and left them unattended.

“Those who have such dogs should be very careful”

“This is a tragedy that has shocked the whole community,” said the mayor of the city of Empoli, Mario Conte, “and it should be a warning to those who have these dogs, which unfortunately are special, with special needs.”

“Those who have them should be very careful. We lost a young child here, which affects everyone. From what I have been told, there have never been any alarming incidents,” he added.

And he added: “It was a brutal attack and even though an uncle of the child intervened to try to free him, nothing could be done.”

The veterinary service has taken over both dogs that attacked the unfortunate boy.
