Kenji Zirac, one of France’s most popular singers, is fighting for his life after being shot in the chest while visiting a campsite.

Kenji Zirac, 27, is in the intensive care unit of the Bordeaux University Hospital after being shot in the early hours of this morning after visiting a camp in nearby Biscarrosse. “He was at a campsite where he suffered a gunshot wound,” said a source investigating.

“Officers were alerted around 5:30am. and when they got there they were confronted by about 20 people who refused to share any information. Emergency services meanwhile removed a seriously injured man who had been shot in the chest and was rushed to hospital.”

Confirming that the victim was Kenji Zirac, the source described his condition as “life-threatening”.

Who is the singer Kenji Zirak

Father-of-one Zirac rose to fame in France in 2014 when he won the third season of popular TV singing show The Voice. Since then he has released five albums and performed duets with other French singing stars such as Vianney and Florent Pagny.

Kendji Zirac was born Kendji Maillé in Périgueux, Dordogne, and is of Catalan gypsy descent. He has often spoken of “growing up in a trailer”.

In August 2013, his uncle posted a video online of Zirac covering a song called Bella, in a gypsy style. It became a huge hit on YouTube and landed him on The Voice, which he won with over 51% of the national vote.

Prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation into the shooting, and police on Monday searched the camp where the incident happened.
