The head of Israeli military intelligence, Lt.-Gen Aaron Haliva, has resigned and will be removed from his position once his successor is appointed, an Israeli statement said.

Haliva had stated that accepts responsibility for intelligence failure which allowed Hamas to attack Israel on October 7.

Haliva, according to Israeli media reports, is also currently involved in the military’s internal investigations into its failures to prevent Hamas attacks.

The investigations are expected to be presented to Israel’s army chief of staff, Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, until the beginning of June.

“I carry with me the dark day”

“On October 7, 2023, Hamas carried out a deadly surprise attack against the State of Israel (…) the intelligence service under my command did not carry out the mission assigned to us,” says Lt. Gen. Haliva, who has been serving in the armed forces for 38 yearsin his resignation letter released by the Israeli military.

“Since then I carry with me this dark day. One day after another, one night after another. I will carry this terrible pain with me forever,” he adds.

The October 7 attack by Hamas killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 250 hostages.

Israel launched a retaliatory military operation in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, vowing to wipe out the Palestinian organization.

Israeli operations in Gaza have claimed the lives of more than 34,000 peoplemostly women and children, according to the Hamas Health Ministry.

Fight against penalties

In parallel development, the Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu he declared yesterday, Sunday, that he will fight against her imposing sanctions against any Israeli military unitfollowing media reports that the Washington is planning such a step against the battalion for alleged human rights violations.

The day before yesterday, Saturday, the news site Axios said Washington plans to impose sanctions on him Netzah Yehuda Order, which has attempted in the occupied West Bank. The Israeli military announced that it was not aware of any action being taken.
