The Turkish Presidency is keeping quiet about the planned visit of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to the United States on May 9. Earlier today (21/4) it was reported that it was cancelled, however there was no official comment from Ankara.

The recent meeting between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, which took place in Istanbul, seems to be a “red flag” for Israel and for the entire West. At the same time, there are strong scenarios that want Turkey to become the new base of Hamas, instead of Qatar.

At the same time, there are reports that the US, and in particular the entourage of US President Joe Biden, want to cancel the reception of Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington, but this is not confirmed by Turkey, as it implies that the said trip was canceled at the initiative of Ankara and against extension of the meeting with the American president. In fact, Turkish media publish that the approval of the additional military aid amounting to 26 billion dollars by the House of Representatives to, among others, Israel is responsible for the “cancellation” of the visit to the USA.

According to ODA TV, Erdogan, as an official guest of Biden, would discuss with the American president critical issues: from the fight against terrorism to Gaza, defense programs and economic relations.

The Middle East on the agenda of the Erdoğan – Haniyeh meeting

It is recalled that the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed the leader of Hamas Ismail Haniyeh in Istanbul and they discussed both the efforts to achieve a truce in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Erdogan’s meeting with the head of the organization’s political office, Ismail Haniyeh, lasted about 2.5 hours.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan said recent events between Iran and Israel should not allow Israel to “gain ground” in Gaza. The Turkish president urged Palestinians to unite amid Israel’s war on Gaza after hours of talks with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh on Saturday in Istanbul, his office said.

Erdogan has failed to cement his position as a mediator in the Gaza conflict that has rocked the region, with the Hamas-led Palestinian territory bracing for a new Israeli offensive and an Israeli attack on Iran.

“Erdogan, shame on you!”

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz condemned the meeting, writing in X: “Alliance of the Muslim Brotherhood: rape, murder, desecration of corpses and burning of babies. Erdogan, shame on you!” Hamas was founded by members of the Muslim Brotherhood in 1987.

In response, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Öncü Keçeli wrote to X: “The Israeli authorities are the ones who should be ashamed. They have slaughtered almost 35,000 Palestinians, the majority of them women and children.” With Qatar saying it will reassess its role as a mediator between Hamas and Israel, Erdogan sent Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to Doha on Wednesday in a fresh sign he wants to claim a leading role.
