“Traction failure”, characterized by diplomatic sources in the American capital the answer given by the deputy representative of the State Department, Vedant Patel, to a question of Hellas Journal about the occupation of Cyprus by Islamic Turkey.
Faithful to the orders to cover up all the crimes of Turkey at all costs, Mr. Patel did not dare to accuse Attila’s country of occupying 40% of the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
Instead, he preferred to give an answer that further worsened the American position regarding the occupation caused by the cowardly Turkish invasion of Cyprus on July 20, 1974. It was preceded by the American-led coup of the Athens Junta against President and Archbishop Makarios.
Hellas Journal’s question was targeted, as it linked the Turkish occupation with Israel’s occupation of the Gaza Strip and Russia’s occupation of Ukraine. The American official stated that supposedly “every circumstance is different”!!!
Mr. Patel was also asked about the obstacles that Hungary and Turkey pose to Sweden’s accession to NATO. And on this subject the deputy representative was “other words to love each other”…
- THE DIALOGUE WITH THE DEPUTY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE STATE DEPARTMENT FOLLOWS:
Michael, go ahead.
QUESTION: Thanks. Thanks a lot, Vedant. You have said many times in the last two days that you are against the Israeli occupation of Gaza. Before – but everyone forgot that, I think. You said you are against the Russian occupation of Ukraine. And in my opinion, you are quite right in saying that. But can we say that you are also against all occupations in the world? For example, the occupation of Cyprus by your allies, the Turks?
PATEL: Michael, every situation is different and it would be inappropriate for me to offer a blanket comment like this for every situation around the world.
QUESTION: And one more question, please.
QUESTION: Do you have any good news, perhaps, to share with us about Sweden joining NATO? For example, or can you tell us if Hungary has removed the barriers, if Turkey is removing the barriers? Any news?
PATEL: This is something that our diplomats in Ankara and Hungary continue to work on around the clock. THE minister (Blinken) raised this (the issue) with Foreign Minister Fidan fhis journey (in Turkey). Of course, that’s something – we didn’t hold back the importance we gave to seeing her Sweden’s accession to NATO as soon as possible. We have long felt that the conditions set out in the tripartite memorandum of understanding at the Madrid Summit have been met and that Sweden is ready to become a NATO ally.

Mikhail, go ahead.
QUESTION: Thank you. Thank you very much, Vedant. You said many times the last two days that you are against occupation of Gaza by the Israelis. Before – but everybody forgot it, I think. You said that you are against the occupation of Ukraine by the Russians. And in my opinion, you are very right to say that. But can we say that you are also against all the occupations in the world? For example, of the occupation of Cyprus by your allies, the Turks?
MR PATEL: Michail, each circumstance is different, and it would be inappropriate for me to offer a broad-brushed comment like that on every case across the world.
QUESTION: And another question, please.
MR PATEL: Yeah.
QUESTION: Do you have any good news, maybe, to share with us about Sweden joining NATO, for example, or can you tell us if Hungary has removed the obstacles, if Türkiye removes the obstacles? Any news?
MR PATEL: This is something that our diplomats in Ankara and Hungary are continuing to work around the clock. The Secretary raised this with Foreign Minister Fidan on his travels. Of course, this is something – we have not held back the importance that we have placed on seeing that Sweden ascend to NATO as swiftly as possible. We have long felt that the conditions laid out under the trilateral memorandum of understanding under the Madrid Summit have been met and that Sweden is ready to be a NATO ally.
