Seven people were killed in a crash when a driver suspected of involvement in smuggling tried to flee police and, after a video chase, collided head-on with another vehicle, the Texas Department of Public Safety said Wednesday.
The catastrophic accident took place on US Highway 57 in the Batesville area, about 83 miles southwest of San Antonio.
The driver, driving a Honda, recklessly passed an 18-wheeler in a designated no-passing zone, Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Chris Olivarez said in a statement posted to X.

The Honda driver’s actions led to the fatal head-on collision with a Chevy SUV, causing flames to engulf the vehicles. Photos released by the agency showed both vehicles badly damaged, with debris strewn across the highway.
The occupants of the Chevy, who were from Georgia, died in the crash. Five passengers, including the suspected smuggler in the Honda, also died, according to Olivarez. Among the dead, several were from Honduras.
