The thriller ended at Hamburg airport, as the man who had been holding his daughter hostage since Saturday night surrendered to the authorities.
Through social media, the Hamburg police announced that the hostage situation at the city’s airport has ended. “The suspect got out of the car with his daughter. The man was arrested without putting up any resistance. The child seems to be fine,” he said in the post.
Since last night, an alarm had been raised at Hamburg airport, when a 35-year-old man of Turkish origin broke the bar with his car and entered the runway, in the area where the planes are parked.
Strong police forces cordoned off the airport, the operation of which was stopped, because of the hostage. Initial reports said the man fired shots into the air and threw two Molotov cocktails from his car window.
At the center of the hostage case seems to be the parents’ dispute over the custody of their four-year-old daughter. The child’s mother had earlier alerted the police, reporting that the 35-year-old had kidnapped the girl.
During all these hours that the hostage took, police negotiators and psychologists had constant communication with the 35-year-old, in Turkish, through an interpreter.
The man, according to Bild, was asking to be allowed to travel to Turkey with his daughter, while he had parked his car next to a Turkish Airlines plane.
Finally, after long hours of negotiations, the 35-year-old surrendered and was arrested. So far no announcement has been made as to when Hamburg Airport will be restored.
