After 10 days, 12 people were freed from the Metropolis in Khartoum – The shocking testimony of the Metropolis
The testimony of Metropolitan Savvas of Nubia who managed to break free with the other Greeks from the Metropolis in Khartoum who remained imprisoned for 10 days from Holy Saturday, April 15, when hostilities broke out in Sudan, is shocking.
As the Metropolitan says, the release of himself and the other Greek Christians was done with the help of a top Muslim cleric in Khartoum who is respected by everyone in Sudan and both warring sides.
Speaking on “Athens 9.84” radio, he spoke of a “suicide mission” that “we had to go through hell”.
“If it wasn’t for the top Muslim cleric of Sudan to help us, we wouldn’t have been able to get out of the Metropolis. They broke us out of the Metropolis, a suicide mission… We went through hell, we were attacked but they stopped when they realized the top cleric of Sudan, everyone respects him and so they respect his cars and that’s how we survived.”
The Metropolitan together with the other Greeks trapped in the Metropolis tried to get out of the Metropolis yesterday and go to the French Embassy in Khartoum but their vehicles came under fire and they turned back.
Speaking to “Athens 9.84”, Metropolitan Savvas of Nubia said, among other things, the following:
“Several Greeks have stayed behind, they didn’t manage to get here to us.
We were freed from the Metropolis by a suicide mission, a Muslim high priest of Sudan, Sheikh Alamin whom I want to publicly thank, because if it wasn’t for him we would not have been able to get out of the Metropolis.
We went through hell though because everyone respects and respects him and his cars let us through. 12 people were released. Half have left and the other half are waiting our turn for the planes.
There are enough Greeks who remain behind.
My stay was pointless because we can neither communicate nor help anyone. It was nature and position impossible.”
