Iran continues to be angered by the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which today published new “offensive cartoons” after the initial cartoons featuring Ali Khamenei last week prompted Iranian authorities to warn France that they would take action against retaliation.
“It took us a week to find the exit,” reads the caption of the new sketch showing Iranian mullahs emerging from a woman’s body.
Charlie Hebdo published a series of cartoons on January 4 about the supreme religious and political leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, angering Tehran.
Hezbollah, Lebanon’s powerful pro-Iranian group, condemned the “heinous” act and called on Paris to take action against the French satirical magazine “to punish the perpetrators of this act, who attacked what is sacred and insulted the dignity of an entire nation.”
In response to the publication of these sketches, Iran last week closed the French Institute for Research in Iran (IFRI), which is under the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in Tehran.
On Sunday, several dozen Iranians gathered in front of the French embassy in Tehran, where they burned French flags.
Charlie Hebdo said it published the cartoons as a show of support for the people of Iran, as the country has been rocked for months by unprecedented protests, sparked by the death on September 16 of 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish Makhsa Amini, after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran for not wearing her headscarf “correctly”.
