Authorities are equipping shelters in apartment buildings and shopping centers in the Moscow region, the head of the regional administration of the Ministry of Emergencies, Sergey Poletikin, told the plenary session of the Duma of the Russian capital region.

MP Oleg Emilyanov asked Poletikin during the plenary session about the state of the shelters in the Ramesnki district, as he claimed some shelters are in a “catastrophic state”.

They provide protection against missile attacks

Poletykin responded by saying that “shelters in apartment buildings” in relation to the events taking place now in Ukraine, “provide protection to the population from missiles, bombs and artillery strikes. These works are carried out in all apartment buildings by the public services sector and should be completed by December 25. This is the decision of the operational staff.”

He said the shelters in apartment buildings and shopping centers were protecting up to 15 million residents, and added that authorities had decided not to put up signs with the exact addresses of the shelters so as not to “upset the public.”

The shelters will have electrical outlets, lights, drinking water and a sitting area. According to the Ministry of Emergencies, it will not be possible to spend more than an hour in the shelter area.

In November, signs were placed on more than three thousand homes in Novokuznetsk indicating the location of shelters. Most shelters are located in the basements of apartment buildings.

Also, the deputy mayor of Belgorod Valentin Demidov promised to publish an interactive map of shelters and place signs throughout the city with the addresses of the nearest shelters.
