A speech by Margaret Thatcher, which warned against Vladimir Putin in 2000, has gone viral online.

The Russian president had come to power a few months before and the former Prime Minister of Britain had referred to him in the worst terms in a speech.

The occasion was the sinking of the submarine “Kursk” in August of the same year, with Thatcher saying about Putin, among other things, that no matter how much she looked at him, she did not see “a trace of humanity” in him.

“We now have the new (president), Mr. Putin. I look at his photos and look for a trace of humanity (audience laughs). I should know better in a few weeks. They recently had the submarine tragedy. It’s interesting what happened. We Western leaders got together and decided to do everything we could immediately to save human lives on the submarine. And the interesting thing is that the new leader of the USSR did not act immediately. He did not try to involve others. We didn’t know what to do. This was very revealing. He seemed to not value human life like we do. The help that went, came slowly. I am relieved that Putin has received criticism for what he should have done and did not do,” Margaret Thatcher was quoted as saying.
