THE Anthony Fauci mocked restaurant patrons for wearing masks when they went out to eat and laughed at his own idea of telling Americans to wear goggles (to avoid droplets) against COVID-19, according to a new book.
The former White House spokesman Brian Morgenstern in his book “Vignettes & Vino” – out on October 25 – he calls Fauci “horrible” and “self-indulgent”.
The advice on glasses
“In January 2020, Fauci said the virus was not something the American people needed to worry about. Then, in the months that followed, he said that people shouldn’t wear masks and that they’re ineffective. By June or July, he had changed his stance and said that everyone should be very concerned and that they should wear multiple masks – and goggles. I vividly remember my blood boiling during an infuriating meeting in the Roosevelt Room of the White House when Fauci laughed at his own advice about glasses. He was so cynical saying he could make people believe anything.” writes o Morgenstern in his book.
“He went on to laugh at people entering a restaurant wearing a mask and then sitting and chatting with their friends while taking the mask off. Of course, he didn’t say such things in public, he just laughed in private at the American fools he was making fun of.”
The measure to wear masks in businesses, but not when eating or drinking, was imposed by local orders across the United States in mid-2020. Indoor tables were generally spaced apart for greater protection from the coronavirus.
Fauci in an interview with “Comedy Central” had urged restaurant customers to wear masks even while waiting for the waiter to order. In his private conversations, however, he made fun of those who reverently observed the protection measures.
In another public statement in July 2020, he had said: “If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use them.”
Asked if eye protection would be officially recommended, Fauci had said: “It could, if you really want perfect protection of mucous surfaces.”
Fauci, 81, will retire in December after 38 years as director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. However, his office has not made any comment.
