The EuroPride 2022 pride march finally took place in Belgrade, despite being banned by the police.
Thousands of members of Europe’s LGBTI+ communities marched through the center of Belgrade and the march ended in a park, where a party will follow.
Since early morning, thousands of police officers have been deployed in central parts of the city to prevent counter-demonstrators from approaching the gathering point for the pride march.
There were incidents in various parts of Belgrade, from far-right groups and extreme religious organizations, who tried to break the police cordon. Organized soccer fans also attacked police officers, who used chemicals to repel them. The police made dozens of arrests.
Politicians from the center-left parties, MEPs and ambassadors took part in the march, as a sign of support.
The European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Daly, was in the Serbian capital today and during her meeting with Prime Minister Ana Brnabic, she expressed the EU’s displeasure with the decision to ban the pride march.
