Queen Elizabeth will be buried on Monday in a lavish 13-hour ceremony.

From last Thursday, September 8, when the monarch of the United Kingdom passed into eternity, until September 19, when she will be buried, there are 11 days. During this time, a series of rituals have been performed, she was moved from Balmoral, Scotland to Britain and now her body is exposed to popular pilgrimage.

The question arises easily: How is the body preserved for so many days?

As the German N-TV network reports, “the body must be prepared accordingly.” Markus Gebauer, spokesman for the association of funeral homes in Lower Saxony, told the German network RND that in order to stop the natural process of decomposition, “bodily fluids are exchanged with formaldehyde and other chemicals”.

This process constitutes a kind of embalming, which lasts from two to six hours, depending on the condition of the body, and can keep it in good condition from two to three months.

Embalmer Philipp Berger, speaking to RTL, emphasized that embalmers take care of the preservation of the body and that “this includes temporarily stopping the decomposition of the body so that the burial or farewell in an open casket can take place later”.

In fact, embalming can be repeated at regular intervals, as is the case with the body of Vladimir Lenin, who died in January 1924 and whose body remains in the mausoleum in Moscow’s Red Square for almost a century.

“The experts subject his body to an embalming process with special injections every 12 months. Depending on the procedure, embalming can be enough for a year,” Berger pointed out.

“Bild”, on the other hand, reports that it is not excluded that the body is preserved with special cooling plates until burial and that many coffins have a special cooling function.
