Some are afraid of heights, some of cockroaches and some of the dark. 18-year-old Ruby Marriott has a phobia of… Michael Jackson.

The young lady spoke about her particular fear, after the video showing her collapsing from one of his bodyguards, went viral.

18-year-old Ruby Marriott, from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was partying at the Bedrock Bar in Ayia Napa, Cyprus, when her night of fun ended in tears.

A Michael Jackson impersonator turned up at the bar they were in – and Ruby’s fear of the King of Pop left her in tears.

Speaking after her clip went viral online – having been viewed nine million times so far – Ruby explained that her fear of the late singer began at the age of five, when her sister and cousin showed her ‘creepy edited videos of him ».

Her 19-year-old sister Macey’s video shows Ruby crying, unable to look at the musician. The video went viral and Ruby opened up about what exactly scares her so much about Michael Jackson.

The student said: “I have a real fear of Michael Jackson. It all started when I was younger, about five years old. My sister and cousin used to show me creepy edited videos of him that people made and conspiracy theories that he was alive, like pictures of him in the background of photos and in people’s windows.”

“Even when his music is playing, a fear runs through me. Thriller is the main song that scares me, mostly because I saw the music video when I was younger and it’s one of his biggest hits, so it plays around me a lot. If a family member is playing their songs, I have to leave the room. The fear started to get worse when we went on a family vacation to Los Angeles and stayed in a house we rented for three weeks.

There was a door with about eight padlocks on it and one of my family members jokingly said “what if Michael Jackson is hiding in there?”, knowing my phobia of him. Every night for three weeks, I had the same nightmare of him crawling out of the closet and coming for me while I was sleeping. It was terrible!

His photoshopped pictures exacerbated my phobia, people just send them to me or show them to me and they bring back the image of me crawling out of my closet. I am now 18 and the phobia has not improved!’

Ruby’s family and friends knew about her unusual fear.

Going out to celebrate her uncle and aunt’s wedding, Ruby was sitting at the bar after dancing.

Ruby said: “It was my first night in Ayia Napa and surprisingly the first bar we went to was very quiet so there weren’t many people there. We had no idea of a tribute act so we went in and had a few rounds of drinks. I really enjoyed it, we were all dancing, taking pictures and laughing. It wasn’t until half an hour later that I heard the beginning of Thriller play and immediately started to panic. I turned around to see a Michael Jackson impersonator dancing on the dance floor next to me.

I ran to where my family was sitting and immediately started crying and panicking even more. I couldn’t even look at him! I thought my fear was bad enough, until I saw someone who looked exactly like him – it got even worse!

We left the bar, but I couldn’t get it out of my head all night. It took me a long time to fall asleep – I had to FaceTime my boyfriend to fall asleep!”

After Ruby’s traumatic encounter, her sister Macey posted a clip of her reaction to the impersonator on TikTok – and it quickly went viral.

More than nine million people watched Macey’s video, with many flooding the comments to say they too were scared of Michael Jackson.

Shocked by the reaction to the clip, Ruby said: “We didn’t expect the video to go viral at all! Macey thought it was funny to post – but I didn’t! I find it funnier now, but it hasn’t changed how I see Michael Jackson. I still find him terrifying – it was traumatic!’
